Q. The website says “Nothing More to Buy.” Does that mean I can’t add any more products to the system?

A. No way José! Protector Plus is a complete system on its own, which means you aren’t required to buy any additional X10 products to secure your home, but you’re welcome to expand it any way you like! Protector Plus will program up to 16 Door/Window Sensors, Motion Detectors, and Remotes. Our customers are always coming up with creative ways to personalize the system! Add as many pieces as you need!

Q. I live on a farm and I can’t hear the system when it activates in my barn. Is there a way to make the system louder?

A. Yes! We want your home security system to be as loud as you need it to be! X10 offers a variety of expansion options for louder decibel levels. The easiest option is the PowerHorn Siren. There are two sizes of siren, with two different levels of sound. So you can have Protector Plus the way it is. You can have Protector Plus a little louder, or you can have a screaming Protector Plus system that would drive anyone away!

For you specifically, the PowerHorn siren is a nice addition to the system because you can place a siren in your house OR in your barn. The siren isn’t wired to the base console. It plugs into an outlet anywhere within a 100 foot radius of your console. That means you can plug it in closer to your home if you like.

Q. I move a lot. What happens if the system breaks during a move?

A. We’ve got you covered! X10 provides you with a FREE one-year warranty, but we recommend investing in a long-term warranty for your Protector Plus system. That way you get customized protection for your lifestyle. Protector Plus is built to withstand years of wear and tear. If you move over and over again, expect the system to hold up well and reprogram just like new. But accidents do happen. When you have an X10 warranty we’ll replace your system no matter what. Q. Is there a keypad/PIN or something that I can use with this system?

A. Protector Plus doesn’t come with a keypad because we’ve found it’s much easier for an entire family to operate the system without having to memorize and constantly change passwords. Customers often tell us that they thought having a password would be safer at first, but it turned out to create more problems in the long run. People stop arming their alarm system if they can’t remember passwords, or forget to update the passwords on a regular basis. As a result their homes are burglarized while the system is unarmed.

As an alternative to the password approach we’ve provided you with two easy-to-use remote controls. They’ve got single-touch commands and hide easily in drawers. Your kids can carry their own keychain remotes to and from school, or – if you’re concerned that the kids will lose their keychain remotes – just set to system to a 40 second delay and hide the remote inside the house. Then your kids can open the front door and the system won’t start calling emergency contacts for 40 seconds – just enough time to disarm the system.

Q. How long does it take to set the system up?

A. About 25 minutes depending on the size of the system. Deciding where to place the sensors and mounting them on walls and door frames is the most time-consuming portion of this setup. Give yourself about 5 minutes per sensor for this step. After they’re mounted it’ll only take another 5 minutes to go around and register each of these sensors with the main console. The 7-piece set shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes to set up.

Q. Q. What if I need to install more than the standard 16 sensors that the Control Console will accept?

A. You have two options here…

If you need to install a lot more than 16 sensors then you can use two of the consoles. Each console will accept 16 sensors. What’s nice about this is that you double the number of emergency contacts you can program and you get an extra siren. It’s smart to do this if you have a large house and plan to add even more parts in the long run. Option number two is a little more technical, but it doesn’t require as many new parts. You can actually order another sensor from us, remove its magnetic contact wires and attach them to a sensor that’s registered to the system. This would effectively make one sensor that monitored two windows. You would have to take the sensor apart to do it - which we don’t recommend because this nullifies your 30 day money back guarantee and any extended warranty you may have purchased – but it can be done.

Q. How many sensors does Protector Plus support?

A. The system supports up to 16 sensors and remotes. If you need to install more than 16 sensors then you have two options.

You can use two Control Consoles. Each console will accept 16 sensors. What’s nice about this is that you double the number of emergency contacts you can program and you get an extra siren. It’s smart to do this if you have a large house and plan to add even more parts in the long run.

Q. How long will the siren stay on after an alarm?

A. The Control Console will sound the siren for four minutes.
That means it should ring for one minute per phone number that you have programmed into the unit. Your emergency contact will hear your emergency message and the alarm in the background. A shorter alarm length is better when a false alarm happens. If there isn’t an actual robbery and the system rings for too long you’re likely to have many neighbor complaints, and it’s possible that a passer by will call the police when there isn’t actually a problem. You don’t want that to happen. Four minutes is long enough to reach all emergency contacts and then the police.

If you’re worried about the strength or the effectiveness of the alarm, we recommend adding a PowerHorn siren to the system. Your system will be louder and you have the ability to move the alarm at will.

Q. Does this unit work with a VoIP phone system?

A. We have not fully tested Protector Plus with VoIP phone systems, but as long as your VoIP system has standard telephone jacks there should be no reason to think it won’t work. These issues are specific to the different VoIP providers and their adapters.

In the event that your VoIP crashes for whatever reason you should know that Protector Plus won’t be able to dial out. We recommend using a standard telephone line whenever you can. If it’s possible to use a second telephone line with the system, then do – but it’s not necessary.

Q. Since the system is armed and disarmed using a remote control, what keeps someone walking down the street from having a remote and simply disarming my system and then breaking in?

A. Each of the security remotes gets registered with the security console during setup. When this is registered it stores a unique security code with the console. That means that each remote talks to your console in a unique “language.” The language is randomly selected out of 20,000 possible languages, and the likelihood that another remote will be registered to the same language is very, very small. It would take a person on the street weeks to figure out what code your system used.

Q. Can't a burglar just unplug the console?

A. Yes, but the system has battery backup. So if the intruder can even locate the Console to unplug it the console will keep ringing until he figures out how to remove the battery backup.

One way to make the console tougher to find is to buy a three-pack of large PowerHorn sirens and place them all over the house. The Powerhorn is louder than the Console alarm, so they’ll attract the most attention. The robber won’t be able to locate the console over all the noise. By the time he figures out which alarm is home to the controls Protector Plus will already have made all its emergency calls.

Q. I have an existing ADT wired security system. Can I integrate this?

A. Yes! Although monitored systems aren’t necessary when you have Protector Plus, you can add it to your existing ADT system. This is great for folks who are stuck in a monitoring contract for the present, but want to have Protector Plus as their sole system in the future. Just hook our Door/Window Sensors up to your existing ADT sensor wires.

Do keep in mind that when you tamper with the sensors, you lose the 30 day money back guarantee and your extended warranty, but it is possible to adapt the system to your needs.

Q. Do your surveillance cameras integrate with the system?

A. No, but they do complement each other. Most customers use the camera system to monitor their outer perimeter, relying on the alarm to notify them if someone tries to break in.

We carry cameras that operate the same way our motion detectors do, (when they “see” an intruder they start recording) but they don’t set off the alarm. Adding cameras to your home is a great idea anyway. The chances that an intruder will be caught on camera and not by Protector Plus are slim to none, but they back each other up well.

Q. Does Protector Plus have a smoke alarm?

A. No, licensing the system as a fire alarm would double its price. However, you can get a noise/vibration sensor and wire it to a Door/Window Sensor. Put this next to your existing fire alarm, arm the Protector Plus, test the fire alarm, and make sure the console goes off. Do remember that any tampered wiring will nullify the 30 day money back guarantee and the extended warranty, but it can be done.



Does a freeze/water leak sensor integrate with the system?

A. No, licensing the system as a leak detector would double its price. However, you can get a noise/vibration sensor and wire it to a Door/Window Sensor. Q. Can I see the system status from my front door?

A. Sure! Buy an extra Control Console and mount it in the front window. Program all the remotes and sensors in but do not connect a phone line. By acting as a “dummy” console, this will also fool intruders into thinking they can disconnect this console and move on.
